The Major Birding Tour

A Comprehensive Journey Through Uruguay

The Major Birding Tour is a fully immersive 15-day experience that takes you to the heart of Uruguay’s most remarkable birding landscapes, including the most remarkable National Parks and the richest Important Bird Areas (IBAs) across the country. This tour is designed for serious birdwatchers and nature lovers who want to explore the full range of Uruguay’s habitats — from vast wetlands and coastal lagoons to grasslands, native forests, river valleys, and rugged ravines.

Over the course of the journey, the itinerary integrates 15 principal birding destinations, carefully selected to represent the full ecological diversity of Uruguay, along with additional nearby hotspots that further enrich the species list. This dynamic routing allows us to maximize birding time in the field and respond to seasonal movements or recent sightings. More than 250 bird species —approximately half of the bird species recorded in the countr— can be observed during the tour, reflecting the stunning diversity of habitats visited. Throughout the journey, guests stay in thoughtfully chosen accommodations — from boutique hotels to rural estancias and family-run lodges — adding comfort, local character, and a strong sense of place to the experience.

Key Habitats Covered:

This tour provides an exceptional ecological cross-section of Uruguay. Habitats explored include vast native grasslands, coastal lagoons and oceanic shores, freshwater marshes, palm savannas, Espinal woodland, Atlantic Forest relicts, ravine forests, riverine corridors, and agricultural mosaics that support important bird populations. This wide habitat spectrum is what allows such a high species diversity to be recorded, including grassland specialists, wetland concentrations, forest-dependent species, and several range-restricted birds characteristic of the Río de la Plata region.

Birding Style:

Our approach is focused, flexible, and experience-driven. Days are structured to take advantage of peak bird activity, combining early morning field sessions with strategic midday transfers and relaxed yet productive afternoon outings. We prioritize quality observations over speed, allowing time for careful identification, behavioral observation, photography, and habitat interpretation.

Physical Demand:

The tour is designed to be moderately paced and adaptable. Most birding is conducted along quiet rural roads, open habitats, reserves, and well-established trails. Walking distances are generally manageable and can be adjusted to suit different fitness levels without significantly reducing birding opportunities. Guests can expect a comfortable balance between time in the field and rest, making the tour accessible while still rewarding for dedicated birders.

Itinerary Flexibility:

Daily itineraries may be slightly adjusted during the tour due to weather conditions or at the guide’s discretion to enhance the overall experience and maximize birding opportunities.
