Within a relatively small area, an exceptional mosaic of habitats comes together, including coastal lagoons, marshes, rivers, grasslands, and native woodland. This diversity supports an impressive variety of birdlife, making it possible to record a high number of species in a single day.
The tour visits a carefully selected network of key sites such as the IBA Wetlands of the Maldonado River, and the José Ignacio, Garzón, and Rocha coastal lagoons. These environments are especially productive for shorebirds, gulls, and terns, with highlights including Snowy-crowned Tern and, during the austral winter, the range-restricted Olrog’s Gull. The region is also notable for large concentrations of migratory terns and offers the best opportunities in Uruguay to observe Chilean Flamingo.
Beyond coastal habitats, surrounding grasslands and wetlands provide chances to observe species such as Greater Rhea, Southern Screamer, and a variety of waterfowl including Silver Teal, Chiloe Wigeon, Black-headed Duck, and Rosy-billed Pochard. More specialized or sought-after species may also be encountered, including Pinnated Bittern, Saffron-cowled Blackbird, and Black-and-white Monjita.
Shrublands and native woodland patches add further diversity, often producing colorful tanagers such as Blue-and-yellow Tanager and Diademed Tanager, as well as woodpeckers and striking tyrant flycatchers like the Blue-billed Black-Tyrant.
With excellent accessibility, diverse habitats, and consistently high bird activity, the Punta del Este & Coastal Lagoons Birding Experience is ideal both for dedicated birders and for travelers seeking a high-quality introduction to Uruguay’s coastal avifauna.
