Despite being the capital city of Uruguay, Montevideo is bordered by an exceptional mosaic of habitats including lagoons, estuarine wetlands, grasslands, and woodlands. Within a short distance of the city center, these environments support an impressive variety of waterbirds, raptors, passerines, and seasonal migrants.
This itinerary has been specially designed for travelers with limited time, including visitors arriving on cruise ships to the Port of Montevideo. We have many years of experience guiding cruise passengers and are very familiar with ship schedules and port logistics. Our planning ensures a smooth experience and guarantees a safe return to the port well in advance of departure, giving guests complete peace of mind.
Throughout the day we explore carefully selected sites in coastal areas along the Río de la Plata. These habitats provide excellent opportunities to observe species such as Southern Screamer, Coscoroba Swan, Long-winged Harrier and Giant Wood-Rail, along with a rich diversity of shorebirds, gulls, and terns. Among the highlights are regional specialties such as Olrog’s Gull and the elegant Snowy-crowned Tern.
Woodland edges and urban green spaces add colorful passerines including striking tanagers such as Blue-and-yellow Tanager, as well as hummingbirds like White-throated Hummingbird. These areas can also reveal notable woodpeckers, including White-spotted Woodpecker and the tiny but charismatic Mottled Piculet.
With diverse habitats, comfortable logistics, and impressive birdlife so close to the city, the Montevideo Birding Experience is an ideal introduction to Uruguay’s birds and a rewarding addition to a broader South American itinerary.
