The Sierras de Minas region is one of Uruguay’s premier birding destinations and among the most scenic natural areas within easy reach of Montevideo. Located just a short drive from the capital, it offers a striking contrast to the surrounding lowlands, with rolling hills, rocky outcrops, valleys, streams, native woodlands, marshes, and open grasslands creating some of the country's most beautiful landscapes.
This remarkable mosaic of habitats supports a rich diversity of birdlife, making the region especially rewarding for birdwatchers. Highlights include sought-after species such as Dusky-legged Guan, Many-colored Rush Tyrant, Yellow-browed Tyrant, Chestnut-backed Tanager, Diademed Tanager, Blue-and-yellow Tanager, and Glaucous-blue Grosbeak.
The itinerary focuses on two of the region’s most iconic destinations: Villa Serrana and Salto del Penitente. Villa Serrana offers a diverse mix of woodland, shrubland, streams, and open hillsides, providing excellent birding opportunities in a spectacular setting. Around midday, guests enjoy a picnic lunch overlooking a picturesque lake surrounded by rolling hills, often with birds visible from the lunch area itself.
Salto del Penitente adds further scenic value to the day. This striking natural area features a waterfall formed by the Penitente Stream, panoramic viewpoints across the surrounding sierras, and pleasant trails that wind through native woodland and rocky landscapes. The combination of habitats supports a wide variety of birds while offering some of the finest scenery in southern Uruguay.
Driving times between birding sites are short, allowing more time in the field and maximizing observation opportunities. Depending on recent records, weather conditions, and guests’ target species, additional stops may be incorporated to further enhance the experience.
Combining outstanding landscapes, diverse habitats, excellent photography opportunities, and high-quality birding, the Sierras de Minas Birding Experience offers one of the most rewarding nature excursions available near Montevideo and Punta del Este.
